Welcome!
My name is Kathleen (Katie) Smith and I am a career services professional dedicated to helping students secure internships, jobs, and professional opportunities while marketing themselves effectively. I completed my master's degree in Higher Education Administration in May 2012 and am currently employed at Elon University in Elon, NC as a Career Advising Fellow. I love working with college students and am currently seeking a full-time permanent position in career services to follow my time at Elon.
At Elon, I am responsible for meeting one-on-one with students and alumni of all class years and majors to discuss career decision-making, ways to create effective professional documents (resumes, cover letters, etc.), self-marketing via LinkedIn and social media, strategies for internship and job searches, and any additional career-related questions or concerns. Through the Elon Student Professional Development Center, I use the Strong Interest Inventory, the MBTI, and StrengthsQuest to help students develop both a direction and language for understanding their interests, personalities, and strengths.
In addition to meeting individually with students, I frequently give presentations on career-related topics, conduct outreach on behalf of our office by collaborating with other departments and student organizations, co-teach job transitions classes, and assist with programming for the SPDC and for the career center in the Martha & Spencer Love School of Business.
I have personal interests in writing, reading, social media, traveling, sports, and crafts. StrengthsQuest will tell you that my strengths are: Empathy, Harmony, Achiever, Developer, and Learner. I agree.
Originally from upstate New York, I recently relocated to North Carolina and love the warm weather of the south.
Please contact me if you have questions!
